About Paestum

Our English summer camp in Paestum feels like going back in time. It started as Poseidonia, founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC when the city began to grow under Greek and later Roman rule. In this historical place, you will find a world-famous archaeological site, cited as the home of 3 of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in our modern times.

In the rolling hills and sunny landscapes, the ancient Greek temples stand tall. These temples show the greatness of a past civilisation and have stood the test of time over the millennia, telling stories of gods and monsters and painting pictures of the myths we all know and love. Get ready for an amazing journey as we discover the secrets of Paestum’s rich past.

History and The Ancient Greek Temples

The old city of Paestum has three well-kept Greek temples. Two of the temples honour the queen of the gods, Hera. It stands tall and shows how much the city respected the goddess of marriage and family. Built in the Doric style, its large columns and solid structure give visitors a sense of greatness as it transports you back to a time when gods lived among people.

Next to the Temples of Hera is the Temple of Athena. It blends Ionic and Doric styles and shows how Greek architecture changed over time. This temple, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom and war, served as a place for learning and planning. Together, these three temples give us a deep look into the faith and building skills of the ancient Greeks.
